Contour

Contour, better known to the Finnish army as Jussi Levasalmi, has at least 14 friends on Facebook, enjoys long walks in the countryside and once attempted to swim 57 laps of an Olympic sized swimming pool filled with custard. Those Fins are crazy, yes?

All fallacy and blatant untruth aside however, Contour is easily in the top 4 or 5 of Finland’s Drum & Bass producers, and his work can be heard across an expanse of rather exciting labels (we won’t talk about them here, we’re here to talk about XPOSURE in case you’d forgotten – THIS IS NOT THE LAND OF BRAND DILUTION). Contour’s debut for Xposure came in the form of ‘Masquerade’, a daring deluge of decibels that damaged the dancefloors of many a nightclub. So of course XO snapped him up for a highly exciting 12” of his own, look out for ‘Point Of No Return’ (ft. Ill-Esha) / ‘Trespassing’ from the Finnish wonderkid.

What’s up next for Finland’s finest? Well, knowing him, it’ll be a cacophony of rainbow flavoured proportions, a veritable aural mouthful of sonic popping candy, a tangent of torrid and tantalising acoustic toast… have we gone far enough with these ridiculous metaphors yet? I think maybe we have…

Not only is Mark Subsonik dominating the ‘Trance ‘n’ Bass’ sound that John B has made so popular, but he also enjoys wearing shorts, has over 1000 friends on Myspace and once came third in a national lemon eating contest (alright… we made that last ‘fact’ up).

Subsonik

Subsonik fell in love with Drum & Bass in 1996 but has in fact been involved with music for much longer, having played the drums for over 20 years! He began DJing and in 1997 played his first event alongside Wally ‘Pish Posh’.

It took seven more years for Mark to get bitten by the production bug, but once he had there was no looking back. Combining his love of both Trance and Drum & Bass, his musical output mixes the epic melodies and atmospherics of the former and the punchy breakbeats and weighty bass of the latter to devastating effect.

It’s his love of rhythm and musicality that is setting his sound apart from the crowd and winning him the support of DJs up and down the D&B scene, from the aforementioned John B to Evol Intent and Cause 4 Concern.

His unique productions have been picked up by Cymbalism, Gain, G2, Beta Recordings, Incite and of course, Ben XO’s new label: Xposure.

Listen to “Frost” (XPUE001)

What else can we say about Johan Gordér (A.K.A. Wezzler) apart from the fact that he makes amazingly crafted Drum & Bass, comes from Sweden and features ‘Advanced Turntable Skills’™ ‘pon the decks. Well, we can also tell you he likes walking his dog at least once a day and his favourite Swedish actor is Peter Stomare, we did ask if he’d ever walked his dog past Peter Stomare’s house but apparently “He lives in LA” which we can accept is a bit far to go just to walk your dog past his house (although in our opinion does show a slight lack of determination).
